Sample Mental Coaching Session with Dr. Cohn

Session 5: How Does Mental Game Coaching Work?

During my mental coaching program session, I will attempt to take you through the same training I do with my on-site students.

The first step in mental coaching is to identify your mental game strengths and weaknesses, which you have already done in earlier sessions. I send all my one on one students an AMAP or Athlete Mental Aptitude Profile, which is a more complete mental game assessment. This serves as a guideline and helps my students ponder the right questions.

If I meet with a student in person or over the phone, the next step would be to ask more questions about his or her attitude and beliefs based on the AMAP so we can develop a complete picture and a game plan for coaching.

The next phase is to develop a mental game plan outline, which guides the work we do together. In this case, I do not know your specific mental game weaknesses so I will present a comprehensive mental game plan.

The mental game plan outlines what we need to improve and includes some mental game skills and strategies. Once the mental game plan is developed, we would begin our work developing specific mental strategies to help you overcome mental barriers.

For the purpose of today's session, we will work on the following mental game plan outline during the next several weeks:

1. Apply Dr. Cohn's Formula: Identify and expel expectations, set manageable objectives, and replace with confidence.

2. Learn to focus on the process or present moment instead of outcomes.

3. Identify unhealthy beliefs that sabotage your performance.

4. Take control of your confidence and learn to remain confidence in the face of adversity.

5. Learn how to shut down doubts and negative thoughts before they ruin confidence.

6. Learn to control your emotions and pre-game or pre-performance jitters.

7. Improve your trust on the court, rink, or course.

8. Enhance your self-esteem and stop worrying about others expectations.

9. Counter the imperfections of perfectionism.

10. Develop pre-event, warm up, and preshot routines.

11. Improve practice efficiency and enhance transfer of practice to competition.

12. Develop game plans, game strategies, or race plans.

In the coming weeks and months, we will discuss all of the above areas in future sessions and develop strategies to enhance your mental game and find the zone!
